Back to School - Green Ideas

Green Scene with Zoë and Edie

Many families are getting ready to go back to school this week, and so we thought that it is a good time for everyone to do some thinking about back to school habits.

Have a clothing swap with your friends, that way everyone gets a new outfit without buying anything new!

If you do decide to buy your clothes new, look into the company that sells the clothes that you are buying - you might be surprised by what you discover (and NOT in a good way!)

Buy local or Canadian-made goods, stocked by your local shops here in town, or check out the Salvation Army for second-hand name-brand clothes.

Ask yourself: do I really need new clothes?

Backpacks and Supplies:

Only get a new backpack if your old one is wrecked, you truly do NOT need a new one each year. Same goes for your lunch pail!

You KNOW the teachers are all getting organized and that every class has pencils, markers, and pencil crayons, so you really do not need anything like that to be ready for back to school.

New pencil case? Nope don’t need that either!

If you MUST buy something for start up, buy your class paper straws to help get rid of plastic straws!

This is one place we can ALL do better and it is not that hard!

A stainless steel (or at least reusable plastic) water bottle is the perfect place to start! This is where we can make a big difference refusing single use plastics.

Stainless steel containers are the BEST, but we know they are expensive so in order to not use any plastic baggies and plastic wrap please go for the reusable plastic containers for lunches unless you can afford the stainless steel

Kids, you can PAY ATTENTION when you are being reminded about the recycling and composting rules at your school so that YOU can do a good job! Join your school Environmental Club (WHAT?! There isn’t one?? START one at your school)! No composting program? Bring your compostables home. No recycling? No way, that's just not true.

In the next issue of Green Scene we will be giving some healthy lunch ideas for anyone packing a lunch!
