Seniors Play Park - Pilot Project
Submitted by Penni Holdham
On Monday August 26 at 6:30 pm, the brand new Seniors Play Park at Lloyd Kelly Parkette, 16 Francis St E in Fenelon Falls will be opening!
We would love you to join us at this event celebrating one of the first Senior’s Play Parks in Canada.
Our ground-breaking ceremony was held in early July and we have really knuckled down to get this install completed along with restoration work of the grass in the general Park setting.
There are so many people who came together to help bring this to reality!
Special nod out to Ormels – for providing tons of A-Grade Gravel and to Young’s Construction for the 5 Yards of Top Soil used to restore the grassy areas!
Many made light of the earth-work as Kathy Armstrong came out with her Horticultural Friends who knew exactly what to do!
Shout out to Laurie, Dale, Peter, Linda and Cindy who all helped at various points in our landscape restoration and construction!
Our Deputy Mayor Doug Elmslie worked with me from the beginning to seek the perfect ‘space’ for this unique installation. He has been a great supporter through-out the development of this project and made the motion at council to support this initiative over a year ago! Our staff at City Hall have been instrumental in supporting and providing contacts for different aspects of construction and manufacture.
Special Thanks to Sandra Barrett who hosted our Community Meeting about this idea back in August of 2018 where 18 people representing various Seniors interests in the community joined in support. This group collectively reviewed five Site options and selected Lloyd Kelly Parkette as the optimum location for this activity! In working at the site over the past month, I have enjoyed to feel the breezes and hear the sounds of the waterfalls under a wonderful blend of sun and shade through-out the day!
Kevin Stybosch of Hoek Van Holland has been the best to work with as he handled the overall excavation and construction of the foundation and ground prep for the Rubber surfacing! Kevin has also provided wise advice and gone above and beyond to help me make this park a lovely space for Seniors to simply hang out in!
Another shout out to amazingly active seniors Mike and Ed who helped with the cement pour for the concrete pad spreading cement and levelling off this large pad!
Gary Sedore provided much needed water for the rubber surface install and to aid in settling of the sand in the Walking Path.
Thanks to Dan at Home Hardware for lending us his personal Generator as we needed it over a few weekends and this generosity saved us lots of dollars in rentals- not to mention that his wee machine was much lighter to handle for us ‘getting there’ in age folks!
Please share this out to your friends and come on down on Monday August 26 at 6:30 pm to check out our achievement and to try it out at our grand opening!
On a personal note, thanks for your support over these past two years as I have been working on bringing this kind of installation to Fenelon Falls. I sincerely hope this will be of interest to many other communities now that we can show what this kind of space for seniors can be like! and... most importantly, your comments, thoughts, and suggestions will help make spaces for seniors viable and available in every community in our region and beyond.
Besides creating a great space for our Seniors here in Fenelon Falls, a point of interest.... Over 2000 Car Tires were recycled to create the Rubber Ground surface seen at our site!
Please call me if you have any Questions or want to realize this kind of thing in your own immediate community! This first Pilot was funded completely by the Ontario Trillium Foundation!
I look forward to seeing you at our Celebration next Monday!
