Green Scene - July 12th, 2018

Written by Zoë and Edie McIntosh

Dear Fenelon Falls Family,

The Green Scene will now be written by US! My name is Edie, I am nine years old, I am going to be in grade four in the fall and I want to be a photographer/artist. My name is Zoe and I am 11 years old, I am going to be going into grade six in the fall and I want to be an environmental activist when I’m older. And we are sisters.

We are writing these articles because we LOVE Fenelon Falls and the Earth and we know you do too! We have learned through our Green Team, the environmental club that we started at our school with some friends (Sophie Kaloudis and Sofia Entzin-Telford) that every little bit helps and that we can all make a difference.

In this issue, we have made a list of VERY easy things that we can ALL do that will make a difference. Please join our family and the Green Team in doing the right thing, we know you really want to and you just have to try!

Some easy changes you can make:

  1. Use reusable water bottles instead of single-use water bottles.
  2. Always say “No Straw Please” when eating out (did you know that The Perch, The Cow and Sow, and Murphy's already stopped putting a straw in every drink? Now you can only have one if you ask - awesome!)
  3. Eat at the above places and let others know that you are choosing to eat there because of their stance on straws.
  4. Use paper plates, bowls, cups, and always say NO to styrofoam.
  5. Use ONLY lake safe soaps! If you are not sure which ones are safe, go and visit Julia Taylor at the Country Cupboard in town and she will help you out (she uses compostable spoons and paper for her famous frozen yogurt, has jars for your shopping and no plastic bags - bring your own or she will supply you with one - amazing!)
  6. ALWAYS take your reusable shopping bags with you to the store - say NO to single-use plastic bags!
  7. Put your produce in your cart - you don’t need that little plastic bag - really you don’t!
  8. Lug your mug - instead of taking out cups!
  9. Recycle - remember if you don’t clean it, it ends up in the landfill, and put all loose plastics into one bag or it also ends up in the landfill (thanks for the information Julia Taylor!)
  10. Hang your clothes on the line to dry.
  11. Consider using your canoe, kayak, or paddleboard instead of your motorized vehicles.
  12. Walk, bike or jog instead of driving your car.
  13. DO NOT use pesticides on your grass or plants especially if you live on the waterfront because the pesticides will all go into the water.
  14. Think about the packaging of the food you packaging is best!
  15. If you have a small yard consider a push lawn mower or battery operated mower instead of a gasoline powered lawn mower.
