Earth Day

In recognition of this year’s Earth Day on Monday, April 22nd, take a moment to ask yourself: how can I live a greener lifestyle or be more eco-friendly?

Being mindful of your environmental impact is easy, and good for the community as well as the planet! Doing your part is as easy as making some of these habits: put litter in the right receptacle, bring your reusable bags to the grocery store, avoid single-use plastic, eat more plants, shop local, walk or ride instead of drive, and reduce waste by bringing your own travel mug and reusable water bottle when you’re out and about.

On social media, the hashtag #trashtag is trending for posts sharing pictures of outdoor spaces before and after someone has cleaned it up and made it free of litter and garbage. Are there any areas in our community that could use the #trashtag treatment?

Take a before picture, clean the space up, take an after picture, and post it to social media. It’s that simple! Use the hashtags #trashtag and #funinfenelon in order to earn 3 entries in this month’s contest and to be shared on our social media channels. The prize this month is $50 - help the environment and you could win.

This Earth Day, let’s all commit to keeping Fenelon beautiful, and after this month keep the public cleanup trend alive: bring a bag of litter cleaned up from a public space in town to Julia at the Country Cupboard in exchange for a free frozen yogurt!

If you have ever spent some time, under the shade of the Maple tree, watching the boats at Lock 34 you may have had the pleasure of visiting with “Grandma Eileen”.

At least 4 days a week she can be found, on the bench, enjoying a famous Country Cupboard frozen yogurt or a Slices ‘n Scoops Kawartha Dairy cone. She is a wonderful advocate of Fenelon Falls; full of suggestions on where to eat, shop, and play.

During the visit, she will proudly share with you, “That’s my granddaughter working at the locks. She gets her height from me”, then she’ll giggle away. Eileen’s granddaughter is headed off to Guelph University in the fall and Grandma Eileen just wants to “see her as much as she can before she leaves”.

The lock employees have gotten so used to Grandma Eileen’s presence, that if she hasn’t been able to make it into town for a shift or two they inquire about her health and well being.

5 Generations of Fenelon Falls

History provided by Ali Carter

My Father’s Grandfather bought a property on Sturgeon Lake in 1912. Our family has been summering here for over 100 years. In 1999, my parents retired here and lead active lives in the community playing golf, curling, and bridge.

When my brother and I had our children, we made it a priority to visit Fenelon Falls, not only during the summer months, to take part in the many unique and exciting events, and variety of activities, the various seasons bring.

My daughter Quinn (8) and her cousin, Cole (9) have been coming to the area year-round since they were born. They are the 5th generation on our property. They are the best of friends and always look forward to their time together at Grandma and Grandpa’s!

Some of their favourite Fenelon activities are:

  • Country Cupboard for frozen yogurt
  • Lunch at Murphy’s
  • Visiting the Fenelon Museum where my Great Aunt Elenor Mann’s figure skates are displayed
  • Skating at Fenelon arena
  • Fenelon Park
  • Harvest Festival
  • Santa Day
  • Candy bar at Grr8 Finds
  • Shopping at Butterfly Boutique and Red Apple
  • and probably their favourite...tube rides and kayaks on Sturgeon Lake!

I may have missed a few things! We adore Fenelon and are so impressed with the diversity and inclusive nature of this town. Every day we all feel blessed that 106 years ago our relatives decided that this was the place to lay roots.
