Beat The Heat and Prostate Cancer at the 2019 Telus Watercraft Ride for Dad

Submitted by Michael Robson

Summer is in full swing and it has been hot here in Fenelon Falls. The sun and humidity have been perfect weather for water fun and this weekend, there is an event that helps you cool off and contribute to a good cause.

This Saturday, the Fenelon Falls Marina will be hosting the 2019 Telus Watercraft Ride for Dad. The event will start at 1 pm at Fenelon Falls Marina and will take participants on a scavenger hunt on Cameron and Sturgeon Lakes. All pleasure craft are welcome and encouraged to join in the hunt. Upon completing the hunt, families may return to the Marina by 4 pm for a chance to win great prizes and enjoy dinner together at 5 pm.

Ride for Dad is a national mission to help end prostate cancer by supporting research and raising awareness. All across Canada, people are fundraising and participating in rides on ATVs, Motorcycles, Snowmobiles, and Watercraft. The proceeds of each ride are donated to the Prostate Cancer Fight Foundation.

One in seven men in Canada will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Cancer does not just affect those individuals but also the people they love and those around them. The Watercraft Ride for Sight provides a way to help fight for a cure for prostate cancer to help those who are diagnosed and their friends and families while enjoying time together and having fun on the water.

Come on out on Saturday to cool off and support a great cause. To pre-register, visit RideForDad.ca or email heather.ffmarina@yahoo.ca.

Fenelon Falls Horticultural Society Garden Tour

Submitted by Gail Henderson

The Fenelon Falls Horticultural Society is dedicated to the beautification of all community gardens within the Village of Fenelon Falls. We feature knowledgeable guest speakers at our monthly meetings, and provide a venue for home gardeners to share ideas and solutions.

This year, we are celebrating our 100th Anniversary – a huge achievement!  In honour of this anniversary, we have planned a number of special events throughout the year.

On July 6th, we will be hosting an expansive Garden Tour. The tour runs from 10 am to 4 pm, is fully open to the public, and is self-guided. You can choose which of 11 private gardens you would like to visit; 5 of are located within Fenelon Falls, 3 are North-East of Fenelon, and 3 are West of Fenelon. You will also have an opportunity to visit all 9 of our beautiful community gardens.

SAVE THE DATE – This is a great chance to see what others are doing to create native and locally sustainable gardens, and to get some new ideas for yourself.

Passports are $15.00 per person, and include a light lunch, being served at St. James Anglican Church, 19 Bond Street East, Fenelon Falls. Passports will be available at St. James on the morning and early afternoon of July 6. They are currently available at The Book Lady, 24 Market Street, Fenelon Falls. You can call 705-887-3136 for further details, or to purchase a passport.

We hope you will be able to join us for this enjoyable day.

Films by the Falls 5th Anniversary Season Finale - Stan and Ollie

Films by the Falls is wrapping up their 5th Anniversary season with some laughs. On Tuesday, May 28th, the Kawartha Lakes Film Circuit is proud to bring the community a fun film — “Stan and Ollie.”

Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy are widely regarded as the greatest comedy partnership in movie history. Between 1927 and 1950, they made over 107 film appearances, defining the notion of the double act with infectious chemistry and hilarious routines that seemed effortless but were honed down to the finest detail. The pair were part of the very few silent stars to survive and thrive in the sound era, adding wordplay to their comedy mastery: “You can lead a horse to water, but a pencil must be led,” quips Stan.

~

Laurel & Hardy, one of the world’s great comedy teams, set out on a variety hall tour of Britain in 1953. Diminished by age and with their golden era as the kings of Hollywood comedy now behind them, they face an uncertain future. As the charm and beauty of their performances shines through, they re-connect with their adoring fans.

The tour becomes a hit, but Stan & Ollie can’t quite shake the spectre of Laurel and Hardy’s past; the long-buried ghosts, coupled with Oliver’s failing health, start to threaten their precious partnership. A portrait of the most tender and poignant of creative marriages, they are aware that they may be approaching their swan song, trying to rediscover just how much they mean to each other.

~

People admire Chaplin, sit in awe of Buster Keaton but they love Laurel and Hardy. There is hardly a comedian alive who hasn’t been influenced by Laurel and Hardy; their reach is long.

‘Delight’ is a notion that comes up a lot discussing Stan & Ollie. For filmmaker Jeff Pope, it is the heart of the “Way Out West,” the simple scene of two men dancing just for the joy of it, that inspired the project.

“You just sit there and laugh about how much they love being together and how they can take enjoyment in such simple things. Is that is why they are still so loved? We can look at them and think: ‘You know what? It doesn’t take a lot to get happy’. … If you look back at them, they can get happy so easily.”

Films by the Falls movie series is brought to you by the Kawartha Lakes Film Circuit (a member of the Toronto International Film Circuit) on the final Tuesday of each month during their season - September - May. “Stan & Ollie” is the last film showing of this season.

Tickets are available at the Box Office on Movie Night. Fenelon Falls Secondary School, 66 Lindsay St. Fenelon Falls on Movie Night. For more information and an advance preview of this months movie, visit www.filmsbythefalls.com
