If your New Year’s Resolution to quit tobacco has already gone up in smoke, a free program could still help you butt out for good in 2019. The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit is promoting a series of free quit-smoking support programs this month in the City of Kawartha Lakes and Northumberland County. The Smoking Treatment for Ontario Patients (S.T.O.P.) Program offers resources and five weeks of free nicotine patches to participants at no cost.

The Fenelon Falls Association of Churches is hosting Winter Food Fest from February 10th to March 20th. Tickets are only $10 per adult, or $5 per child (8 and under), unless otherwise stated and each church is asking attendees to please bring along non-perishable food items to help fill the local food bank.
The Fenelon Falls & District Chamber of Commerce (FFDCC) is excited to announce the Fenelon Falls Downtown Revitalization Facade Award in recognition for updated building facades in Fenelon Falls. In acknowledgement of our local small business owners’ time, effort, and expense in improving their building facades, the Fenelon Falls & District Chamber of Commerce will formally present participants with a certificate of recognition.

This past Christmas, my husband had the flu for the first time in his life. Both of us tend to be healthy and rarely catch any of the bugs going around, so it came as such a shock to him that he would barely believe it was “just the flu” as he was quite certain it was far more serious and likely life-threatening.
The Fenelon Falls Winter Festival 5K/10K snowshoe course was set to challenge the best in the Province, providing vertical challenges unusual in snowshoe competition in Central Ontario combined with single-track sectors that challenged agility and speed. For the first time Sir Sanford Fleming College brought three Cross Country team members, including their Canadian 3K Obstacle Course Champion Andy Hein.
An initiative is taking root in the City of Kawartha Lakes to help students who use nutrition programs at school reap the rewards of eating local foods. For more than a year, Food For Kids City of Kawartha Lakes has been working to create a ‘Local Food Initiative’ to benefit Student Nutrition Programs (SNPs).

ith Haliburton County’s local food system blossoming, an upcoming forum will look at ways to further nurture and enhance this growing sector. This free, interactive event, which includes lunch, is a chance for interested residents, food producers, farmers, retailers, restauranteurs, elected politicians, municipal staff and others to learn about the exciting food and agriculture-related projects underway in Haliburton County.
The Kawartha Lakes Health Coalition requested help from our community to stop the possible amalgamation of Peterborough Regional Health Centre and Ross Memorial Hospital. One undertaking was arranging a bus to Toronto to join the Ontario protest. Thankfully, at the moment, that discussion has stopped. But many other health issues have not. Their work continues.

.This past week on movie night, Films by the Falls really upped their game, debuting a brand new screen and speakers! While the old screen worked with a projector, this new screen acts more like a computer monitor; directly broadcasting the film to the audience.
The Fenelon Falls Winter Festival, hosted by Snowshoe Kawartha, takes place this Saturday, February 2nd, starting at 10 am. There will be a variety of winter activities with a main focus on snowshoeing and the Ontario Cup Provincial Championship, which is sanctioned by Snowshoe Canada.

As we look back at 2018, we will reflect on the things most memorable. For the Fenelon Theatre Marquee committee, Saturday Sept. 29th is the day that will stay in our minds forever. After over 2 years of planning, meetings, fundraising, hard physical work, and so much more, we watched the Marquee lights go on (after a momentary delay).

This weekend the Fenelon Falls Curling Club is hosting the Annual Bonspiel for Charity, this year in support of the Kawartha North Family Health Team. There will be two draws, with the first at 9 am, and second at 11:15 am. Spectators and visitors are welcome!

Submitted by Marina Hodson. On Tuesday, Canada revealed its most recent edition of Canada’s Food Guide. The first iteration, called “The Official Food Rules”, was introduced in July of 1942 in an attempt to mitigate nutritional deficiencies during wartime food rationing.
Films by the Falls welcomes you to the first screening of the year, “Puzzle”, on January 29th at Fenelon Falls Secondary School. Doors open at 6:30 pm, and the show starts at 7:30 pm. Admission is only $10.
